# Institutional Custody

> Hold trUSD and strUSD with a regulated custodian

Three institutional custodians support trUSD and strUSD: BitGo, Anchorage Digital, and Cactus Custody. Funds and corporate treasuries that keep digital assets with a regulated custodian can hold Tori's tokens in the accounts they already use, under the approval rules they already have.

## What institutional custody means

An institutional custodian is a regulated firm, usually a trust company or a bank, that holds digital assets on behalf of its clients. The custodian holds the private keys, and the client never handles them. Each client sets its own approval rules: who can request a transfer, how many colleagues must approve it, and which addresses can receive it. Nothing leaves the account until those rules are met and the custodian has run its own checks. Client assets are held separately from the custodian's own.

Many institutions can only hold assets this way, because regulation or their own investment policy requires it. For them, a token their custodian does not support is a token they cannot hold.

Custodians enable each asset separately, and support can differ between a custodian's legal entities. Before the first deposit, ask your custodian to confirm that trUSD or strUSD is enabled for the entity that holds your account and to set up a deposit address. Then check that the token contract it shows matches the address on the [contracts page](/resources/contracts).

If your custodian is not listed, ask it to add trUSD and strUSD, and tell us at [partnerships@tori.finance](mailto:partnerships@tori.finance).

<Note>
  A custodian changes who holds the keys, not what the tokens are. trUSD is still a synthetic dollar backed by trading positions, and the risks in [Risk Disclosures](/resources/risks) apply to both tokens wherever they are held. How the protocol holds its own reserves is a separate arrangement, covered in [Backing & Reserves](/solution/backing).
</Note>

## Holding strUSD in custody

strUSD needs no attention while it sits in custody. It is an ERC-4626 vault token, so rewards raise the amount of trUSD each strUSD is worth while the balance stays the same. There is nothing to claim, and nothing rebases.

Staking and unstaking do need action, because both are contract calls made from the address that holds the tokens. Unstaking takes two of them: one starts the 7-day cooldown, and the other claims the trUSD once it ends. Confirm that your custodian can make these calls. If it cannot, move the strUSD to a wallet that can before you unstake. The [strUSD page](/products/strusd) covers the exchange rate and the cooldown in full.
